After what felt like forever watching and waiting, Snow Island has finally opened its doors in Kailua-Kona—and Elissa and I were among the first in line to check them out. We’ve been anxiously waiting and watching dreaming of those towering bowls of fluffy, Korean-style shaved ice. I was recently introduced to bingsu by Elissa and Meena on one of our O’ahu Foodie trips.
The space is modern and has a nice open feel to it. The menu has the perfect balance of yummy sandwiches, fun drinks and yummy desserts. Being a ig matcha fan, I went straight for the matcha bingsu, while Elissa grabbed the Kona coffee bingsu because, as a barista, it is a must.
My matcha bingsu was a green mountain topped with sweet Adsuki beans , chewy mochi , a wafer cookie and a side of condensed milk – AKA Snow Cap, which I feel you can never have enough of. It was everything I love about matcha—earthy, not too sweet, and refreshing. Elissa’s Kona coffee bingsu was rich, creamy, and bold with just the right hint of bitterness to balance the sweetness.
It’s so much fun having my daughter Elissa do all the research —she’s always discovering new places for us to try, diving deep into the foodie world, and turning even a simple dessert run into a little adventure. These outings have turned into our own tradition, and of course, we’re tying Meena into our foodie field trips too. There’s nothing better than sharing great food with great company.
Kailua-Kona just got a whole lot cooler. If you’re a bingsu lover—or just someone who appreciates a seriously good dessert—run, don’t walk, to Snow Island.
