In a world where convenience often outweighs consciousness, I’ve made a very intentional choice to prioritize safety—for pets, pollinators, and people—over quick chemical fixes when it comes to weed control.
As someone who loves both gardening and animals, I’ve spent years learning about the harmful effects of common herbicides. Many commercial weed killers contain ingredients that can linger on lawns and walkways, exposing pets and local wildlife to toxic chemicals.
Our dogs don’t just walk on the grass—they roll in it, sniff it, and sometimes even taste it. Traditional herbicides can stay on surfaces for days and cause anything from irritated paws to serious health problems over time. For me, the risk isn’t worth it.
That’s why I’ve incorporated pet-safe, homemade and natural weed solutions. They’re made with simple ingredients like vinegar, salt, and dish soap, and they still get the job done—without putting my dogs at risk.
Bees are more than just backyard visitors—they’re essential to our entire ecosystem. Unfortunately, many weed killers, especially those with neonicotinoids or glyphosate, harm pollinators by disrupting their ability to forage, navigate, and reproduce. Without bees, our food systems suffer, and our gardens lose their vibrancy.
Choosing bee-safe alternatives is my way of giving back to these tiny workers. By avoiding chemicals that harm bees, we are helping to protect the pollinators that keep our flowers blooming and our fruits growing.
Being mindful of what I use in my garden is a small act with a big ripple effect. Whether it’s mixing up a batch of pet-safe weed killer or planting native, bee-friendly flowers, these choices matter. They reflect a broader commitment to living in harmony with nature, rather than dominating it.
I believe that you can have a beautiful, well-kept yard without compromising the safety of your pets or the health of the planet. Below is a recipe for the weed killer we use along with some before and after pictures. Some will need a second dose. I hope this will inspire you to give alternatives a try.
Let’s care for the earth with the same love we give our pets. 🌱💚🐾
